Winter Skincare for Melanin-Rich Skin: An Esthetician's Guide
Share
Cold weather is here, and if you have melanin-rich skin, you have probably already noticed it. Your elbows look dull and dry by lunchtime. Your face feels tight after cleansing. That dark spot you were finally fading seems to stick around longer.
As a licensed master esthetician, this is the season I see the most dryness and uneven tone in the treatment room. The good news: a few simple shifts in your routine make a real difference. Here is how I tell my clients to adjust for winter.
Why winter hits melanin-rich skin differently
Cold air outside and heated air inside both pull moisture out of your skin. When the outer layer of skin dries out, it flakes, and on deeper skin tones those flakes catch the light and show up as a dull, grayish cast. Dryness also weakens your skin barrier, which makes skin more easily irritated.
That matters because irritation is one of the biggest triggers for dark spots on melanin-rich skin. Harsh scrubbing, stripping cleansers, and cracked, inflamed skin can all lead to new discoloration that takes months to fade. In winter, protecting your barrier is also how you protect your even tone.
1. Cleanse gently, and keep it short
Swap anything that leaves your skin squeaky or tight for a gentle cleanser. Our Silky Glow Brightening Cleanser uses turmeric and licorice root to cleanse and brighten without stripping. For dry or sensitive skin on the body, the Oatmeal & Calendula Honey Cleansing Bar is my go-to.
Keep showers lukewarm, not hot. Hot water feels amazing in January, but it pulls out the natural oils your skin needs.
2. Add a hydrating layer before moisturizer
Think of your skin like a sponge. A dry sponge does not soak up much, but a damp one does. Apply a hydrating toner or serum right after cleansing while skin is still slightly damp.
Mist on our Rose Glow Balancing Face Toner, then follow with a few drops of BotaniGlow Hydration Elixir with rosehip, cucumber, and rice extract.
3. Seal it in, especially on damp skin
This is the step most people skip, and it is the biggest fix for dull, dry skin. Within a few minutes of getting out of the shower, apply a rich moisturizer to damp skin to lock that water in.
For very dry areas like elbows, knees, shins, and hands, reach for Glow Butter, our whipped mango seed butter and jojoba oil body butter. If you prefer something lighter that still hydrates, Cucumber Glow Cream melts in without feeling greasy.
Esthetician tip: Want a glow for date night or the holidays? Layer a few drops of Aura Glow Shimmer Body Oil over your body butter on shoulders and collarbones.
4. Exfoliate less, not more
When skin looks dull and flaky, it is tempting to scrub harder. Please do not. Over-exfoliating damages your barrier and can trigger the dark spots you are trying to avoid.
Once or twice a week is plenty. Use the Hibiscus Glow Body Scrub with gentle pressure on the body, and always follow with moisturizer.
5. Do not forget your lips
Lips have no oil glands of their own, so they dry out first. Once a week, buff away flakes with Glow Scrub Lip Polish, then keep Peppermint Lip Butter in your bag for daily use.
6. Keep wearing sunscreen
Melanin offers some natural protection, but not enough to prevent sun-related dark spots. UV rays reach your skin on cloudy winter days too. If you are working on fading hyperpigmentation, a broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher every morning helps keep your progress from slipping.
Your simple winter routine
Morning: gentle cleanse, hydrating toner, serum, moisturizer, sunscreen.
Evening: gentle cleanse, hydrating toner, serum, moisturizer. After your shower, body butter on damp skin.
Once or twice a week: body scrub and lip polish.
Small, consistent habits beat a complicated routine every time. Your skin will thank you by spring.
